Accommodation in the Kimberley
The Kimberley is teeming with unrivalled natural beauty, from the jagged peaks of the Bungle Bungles, to the mesmerising tidal pull of the Horizontal Falls. Even though the landscape may seem harsh and unforgiving, there is still plenty of accommodation in the Kimberley, which caters for hundreds of thousands of tourists throughout the year.
Broome is the largest town in the region, and is often used as a base to explore the Kimberley via daytrips. There are some great high-end hotels and resorts located within the town, including several along the picturesque beachfront. Tourists will be able to find budget accommodation too, including backpacker inns. Another township worth basing a holiday in is Kununurra, in the northeastern corner of the Kimberley. A range of lodgings welcome guests here, from inexpensive caravan parks to mid-range apartments and even up-market resorts.
Some of the most authentic and memorable accommodation options in the Kimberley are the homesteads. There are several dotting the region, including the renowned El Questro and Mt Hart homesteads. They are generally the most luxurious, and of course most expensive, places to stay in this corner of Australia, offering spectacular comfort in a stunning natural setting.
Another option worth experiencing is a farm-stay. There are numerous cattle stations operating in the area, although visitors have to remember that some of these farms are actual working farms, so facilities and services can be limited. In addition, there are farms that offer more mid-range lodgings for guests. It’s a great way to see the landscape and experience the culture of the Kimberley at the same time
If tourists prefer a more liberal holiday experience in the region, hiring a campervan is a must. Some of the roads can get challenging in parts, and distances are usually vast. However, most of the landmarks boast a campsite nearby, so motorists can easily find a spot to park their campervan for the night. Be aware that most sites are basic, with little more than bore water and outhouses available.
